This eLearning is approved by the Royal Society of Biology. Training course approval is an independent review process that recognises relevant, high quality training. Upon completion of this course, attendees can claim 15 CPD points.

Who should complete this course?

This eLearning is aimed at anyone involved in the management of laboratory personnel competence, including:

  • Health, safety and biosafety advisors and professionals
  • Facility mangers and coordinators
  • Managers (including science and operations)

Note: The material presented in this eLearning is based primarily on universal principles, such as those outlined by the World Health Organization (WHO). While this eLearning mentions specific UK and international law at different points, this is to provide examples of how some of those fundamental principles are legislated. Hence, this eLearning is open to audiences from any country or geographical location.

Course description

Laboratory incidents can result in dangerous situations that pose risk to people, property, equipment, products or the environment. However, a process of emergency preparedness and response can be implemented to either mitigate those risks, or reduce their impact. To be effective, it must be systemic and consider actions to be implemented and followed before, during and after an incident

This eLearning provides an overview of the most common laboratory incidents, and how to:

  • Reduce their likelihood
  • Prepare for them
  • Respond to them
  • Investigate them
  • Prevent their recurrence

This eLearning is divided into four parts:

  1. Emergency Preparedness and Response
  2. Biosafety Incidents
  3. Human Failings
  4. Incident Investigation

Note: Contents of this eLearning are also included in the Biorisk Advisor Training: Blended learning and Biorisk Advisor Training: Facilitated learning.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this eLearning you will be able to:

  • Compare and contrast dangerous occurrences, near-misses and accidents
  • Explain the immediate, underlying and root causes of incidents
  • Describe an incident management strategy
  • Describe emergency procedures and what factors contribute to their development
  • List and explain types of human failures, including errors (skill-based and mistakes) and violations
  • List and explain factors that may contribute to human failures (i.e. human factors)
  • Describe how human failures can be reduced
  • Explain incident investigation process and its purpose

Assessment and certificate

Each part of this eLearning will end with a multiple-choice quiz with a pass mark of 70%. Upon successful completion you will receive a certificate of completion.
